Drain Unblocking

How do I know if my drains are about to block?
Tell-tale signs of a blocked drain can include unpleasant smells, noisy drains and gurgling noises, slow draining, subsidence issues, localised damp, or the back up of sewage through the drain.

What causes blocked drains?
There are numerous causes which can impact drainage flow and efficiency. Some of the most common causes for blocked drains (both internal and external) include:
⦁ Build-up of grease and fats
⦁ Toiletries, wipes (including those labelled as ‘biodegradable’) and soap-scum
⦁ Loose hair build-up
⦁ Dirt and bacteria
⦁ Heavy rain
⦁ Broken pipes or poor pipe installation
⦁ Poor water flow
⦁ Tree roots, leaves, and debris.

How is a blockage cleared?
There are several ways a blockage might be successfully cleared. The first imperative is to get eyes on the ground using a CCTV drain inspection. Once we can locate the cause, or causes of the issue, we will either use high pressure jetting or rods to clear the obstruction. If there is damage to the pipes, we can look to further work to repair or replace as necessary. We will keep you updated across the whole process. We are always happy to discuss the options we have available for getting things back up and running, to a standard you are happy with, and within your current budget.

Drain Repair

There are instances when the problem goes beyond a simple drain blockage or obstruction. Drains might be damaged or partially collapsed. In these instances, it is important to quickly engage in the relevant repair-work needed to avoid any further damage to both drains and your property.

It is difficult to be sure whether a drain is blocked or damaged without the help of a professional drainage engineer – this is why we will always perform a CCTV drain inspection. However, some common signs that the issue might be more than a blocked drain include:

⦁ Re-occurring blockages despite repeated attempts to unblock the drain.
⦁ Localised issues of damp or mold.
⦁ Visible damage to pipes – cracking and leaking.
⦁ A very strong odour to suggest a large build-up in the pipes.

There are several methods used to repair a damaged drain.
A common method which we might use is a patch repair. This causes minimal disruption and is a very quick and efficient method for getting things working again. A patch repair is a cost-effective solution that can be applied to individual defects found within the drainage system. This involves inserting a fiberglass patch into the pipe system.

CCTV Drain Surveys & Reports

The difficulty with drainage issues and blockages is that they are hidden from sight making it difficult to know where the root of the problem is, and indeed if there is more than one. This is why we offer CCTV drain surveys, as long as this is accessible. This will enable us to visually detect the location of a blockage, as well as assess the drainage system and any potential damage. We are always happy to include a more extensive report, as part of a further service.

Root Cutting

Mechanical root cutting is a common technique that is often required when root ingress has penetrated the drainage system. There are a number of ways to achieve this, including various heads (e.g. spinners, warthogs) that perform high pressure jetting. Rods and root brushes can in some instances be more time effective to remove the roots. We will always take the time to properly assess the defect and discuss with you the best method for your situation.

Drain Excavation

Drain excavation is often necessary when there is a collapsed section or dropped section of pipe. We will use our Mini-Cam Solo Pro+ 60m axial system to first pinpoint the exact position of this. This ensures we are able to reduce the time and costs involved with the excavation before replacing the damaged section of pipe.
